Google has always shown whether the price for a suggested flight itinerary is typical, low or high, but now it gives you even more data to consider. Here is a side-by-side comparison of a flight search for New York to Los Angeles. As you can see in the screenshot above, you can now filter out basic economy fares. You can choose to book directly with the airline or via a third-party OTA, but not Google itself. Unlike Expedia, Orbitz, Tripadvisor or Kayak, it’s not an online travel agency.
New tools: How to use Google Flights to find cheap flights
If I zoom out for a world view, I’ll see the best-priced destinations of note around the globe. If I zoom in closer on the map, the system recalibrates and shows me more destinations and price points within the updated map view. How to search multiple airports at once
You can do it all right there in your search engine. This makes it incredibly easy to book and get a great hotel without going to a bunch of different sites. To sort hotels by price, click on the “All Filters” on the top left. Just click on “Visit site” to book your hotel or vacation rental. Google says that some of these results may be personalized based on your browsing activity and recent Google searches. Below are the actual results for the city you’re searching for.

According to Craig Ewer, who works in communications at Google, the tool will “let travelers know when airfares are expected to be lowest for booking their chosen dates and destination.”
When the price for a flight or route you’re tracking changes significantly, you can get email updates. Perhaps you have searched for “When is the best time to visit Hawaii?” Google Flights may show you suggestions to help you continue planning that trip. Immediately above your search results, a little toggle reads “Track prices” (boxed in green in the screenshot above). This will again show the cheapest dates in green, and you can easily line up different outbound and inbound options to see if the cheapest dates work for you.
You can also search for and book hotels and vacation homes right from Google’s Travel site. With Google Flights, you can also set up a price alert for your trip that you’re planning. Obviously, if you’re traveling for something specific, this might not be an option. There is now a “Cheapest” tab that you can sort flights by, instead of just “Best”. Tap on “Continue,” and from there, you’ll see a pop-up with links to go to each airline to book your tickets. This page shows your flights, as well as bag details for both flights.

The “Cheapest” tab prioritizes low prices, and includes additional itineraries and prices from online travel agents. By default, Google shows you the flights that offer the best trade-offs between price, convenience, and ease of booking. Google makes it so easy to see what options are available, as well as prices and whether you should wait to book. Now, right above the “Best departing flights”, you’ll see an option for “Track prices” click that toggle.
Similarly, you can filter flights by the number of stops along the way. You need both flights to occur outside business hours, but not too late in the evening, as you don’t want to land in the middle of the night. Regardless, there are plenty of options to choose from. Of course, these may or may not be the best flights for you. The example below shows that a December flight to Miami would have been much cheaper if I had waited until Sept. 13 to book it.

Book separate or self-transfer tickets for one trip

Thankfully, Google Flights will calculate your flight’s approximate carbon emissions based on the route, aircraft type and seating classes. Sustainability is an increasingly hot topic when it comes to travel.
With filtered airline search results, Google can help you keep that momentum going. If you don’t fly often, the operating airline may not matter to you as much as the price does. A one-stop flight will usually be the sweet spot between price and comfort.
